Frequently Asked Questions

General questions

What’s a smart home?

A smart home has several connected products that can be configured and controlled using mobile apps.

The Allia offering will initially focus on heating and energy connected products.

In practical terms, what will the Allia smart home offering be?

The offering will be scalable, but Allia is first and foremost a range of smart products that can be managed with a mobile application so that you can easily control your entire smart home anytime, anywhere.

The following smart products are available:

  • a hub
  • smart thermostats
  • smart light bulbs
  • smart plug outlets
  • smart dimmers
  • a smoke detector
  • a weather station

Hub

What’s the best place to set up your hub?

With a bit of planning, you can optimize your Allia mesh network and ensure devices communicate well with each other. As far as it is possible, install the hub in a central location; doing so will help devices in different rooms communicate. The more Allia-compatible connected objects you have in your home, the more they will act as Zigbee signal amplifiers so that thermostats and connected objects communicate well.

Troubleshooting steps to perform before attempting to re-pair devices

Follow the steps below in the order indicated to reset a device that’s no longer responding to instructions sent from the application. After each step, check whether the problem is solved.

  1. RECONNECT TO THE ALLIA APPLICATION
Tap the Logout button on the Profile page (icon).
    Login to your account.
  2. RECONNECT THE NETWORK
Close the application. Disconnect the Ethernet cable. Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect it. When the indicator light turns green, open the application.

Number of IoT devices that can be connected to an Allia hub

You can connect the following number of products at one time to the hub.

  • 20 thermostats
  • 10 dimmers
  • 25 smart switches and plug outlets (in combination)
  • 10 white and coloured light bulbs (in combination)

Smart thermostat

How do I connect a smart thermostat?

Please follow the instructions below to connect a thermostat.

If the thermostat has already been connected to the hub, start with step A, otherwise go directly to step B.

A. Disconnect the thermostat from the hub

  1. On the thermostat, press the central button for three seconds; menu 10 will then flash on the display.
  2. Press the right arrow key; OFF will flash on the display.
  3. Press the central button briefly. The display will flash for a few seconds and then start flashing slowly after a short stop.
  4. Press the same button for three seconds; the display will stop flashing and the room temperature will be shown. The network icon (antenna icon) will no longer be visible in the upper left corner of the screen.
  5. On the Device page in the application, the thermostat tile will display as Disconnected.
  6. The thermostat is now disconnected.

B. Connect a thermostat

  1. From the Device page of the ALLIA application, tap the + to add a new device.
  2. Select the type of device you want to add by clicking on “Thermostat,” “light,” and so forth.
  3. On the thermostat, access menu 10 and select automatic connection (ON).
  4. On the thermostat, tap the central button to confirm the selection. The icon (antenna) will flash rapidly while the thermostat searches for the channel. The Zigbee channel will be displayed when the connection is established.

Once the thermostat is connected to the gateway’s Zigbee network:

  • the icon (antenna) will be displayed on the thermostat’s home screen.
  • the ALLIA application will indicate that the thermostat is successfully connected, and the thermostat will be displayed in the application.

You can now replace each thermostat’s default name with a meaningful name that’s easier to recognize (e.g., bathroom).

C. Reset a thermostat

If you have trouble connecting a thermostat, you may need to reset it to its default values. Here’s how:

  1. Press the thermostat’s central button for three seconds; menu 10 will then flash on the display.
  2. Briefly press the central button until you reach the “dEF” menu with the letter “n” underneath.
  3. Press the right arrow key once to display the letter “y” under “dEF.”
  4. Press the central button once; the screen will display several items alternately.
  5. When you see °C on the display, press the square button for three seconds; the display will stop flashing, and the room temperature will appear on the screen. The network icon no longer appears in the upper left corner of the display.
  6. The thermostat is now reset.
  7. Try connecting again as described in step B (Connect a thermostat).

Can I install a thermostat myself?

No. A master electrician must perform the installation in accordance with the applicable electrical code. A poorly wired thermostat can be a fire hazard.

How do I turn on the time and outdoor temperature display on my thermostat?

The Allia thermostat indicates the indoor and outdoor temperature on its main display.

The time cannot be displayed.

The outdoor temperature displayed on my thermostats does not correspond to the one indicated by my application or the Weather Channel’s app.

The outdoor temperature displayed in the Allia application and on the thermostats is transmitted by Weather Underground (an IBM company), Stelpro’s weather data provider and one of Allia’s smart home partners.

Smart plug outlets

How do I connect a smart plug outlet?

If you discover that a smart plug outlet is no longer connected to the hub, you must reconnect it as follows:

  1. From the Device page of the ALLIA application, tap the + to add a new device.
  2. Select the type of device you want to add by clicking on “Thermostat,” “light,” etc. The hub indicator light will turn blue and flash.
  3. Press and hold the button on the plug outlet and plug it into the wall socket.
  4. Release the button once the plug outlet is connected.
  5. The button indicator light will turn blue and flash three times; the plug outlet is now connected to the hub.
  6. Wait about 30 seconds; you should see the plug outlet added on the Device page in the application.
  7. Operate the plug outlet through the application.

Are you having trouble connecting or controlling a device that is far from the hub? Adding a smart plug outlet might help. Here’s how.

Wider distance and obstacles between a device and the hub, such as multiple walls or large metal objects, can interfere with the ZigBee signal and make intermittent communication or pairing impossible.
Adding a smart plug outlet between the hard-to-connect or hard-to-control device and another device already connected to the hub can boost the ZigBee mesh, and allow that device to connect or be easier to control. The smart plug, in this case, acts as a signal repeater.

Which devices can be plugged into a smart plug outlet?

Small devices without dimmer or lamps that cannot be dimmed or whose brightness does not need to be adjusted can be plugged into a smart socket.

Two devices are plugged into my double plug outlet. How do I turn on one of them?

Model 43095

If you own a Model 43095 smart plug, note that it displays the ZigBee logo on both sides and only allows you to turn both devices on or off at the same time using the application.

Smart wall switch

How do I add a smart wall switch to the Allia application?

To connect a smart wall switch, follow these steps:

  1. On the Device page of the ALLIA application, tap the + to add a new device.
  2. Select the type of device you want to add by clicking on “Thermostat,” “light,” etc. The hub indicator light will turn blue and flash.
  3. Turn off the switch.
  4. Press the upper part of the switch button ten times quickly. The indicator light at the bottom of the switch will turn blue and flash three times. When the indicator light stops flashing, the switch is connected to the hub.
  5. Wait about 30 seconds; you should see the switch added on the Device page in the application.
  6. Turn on the switch in the application.
  7. Connection is complete.
